When the Joy Fades and the Pressure Takes Over…

You feel it — something’s off.

Your son, who used to hit the ice with fire, hunger, and that spark you loved seeing… is now coming home quiet, frustrated, or empty.

He’s not playing at the level you know he can reach.
Not because the skill isn’t there — but because something inside him is slipping.

He’s carrying the pressure alone. Taking every mistake personally.
Believing he has to shoulder the whole team:

“It’s on me. I should’ve done more.” And you’re watching him change.
Less joy. Less confidence. Less of the kid you recognize.

As a dad, it hits differently.

You want to step in. You want to guide him.
But the moment you try… he shuts down, pulls back, or brushes it off.

It leaves you stuck between pushing him forward or backing away completely.

Here’s the truth: you’re not the only dad living this.
And your son isn’t the only player feeling the weight.

This isn’t a skill problem. It’s not a hustle problem.

It’s an inner game problem — emotional balance, confidence, and resilience.

That’s where my work begins. Helping young athletes reconnect to themselves and activate the part of their mind that actually unlocks performance.

Hi, I’m Thomas Gobeil!

Former Canadian pro hockey player, I’m now an Emotional Intelligence Coach for hockey players and their family. I was that kid who always had a stick in his hands. Maybe that’s your kid, too?

From a young age, it was clear to me: I wanted to become a pro hockey player. That was the dream. That was the only goal.

But I was also a deeply sensitive person — and as you probably know, sensitivity doesn’t always mix well with the world of competitive hockey.

Even though I trained with a personal coach several days a week, I couldn’t perform on the ice the way I knew I could. I felt like something was stuck or holding me back. I was constantly disappointed in myself. I was a young guy under a lot of pressure, carrying big expectations, and I didn’t know how to navigate it. My self-esteem started to crumble. I pushed harder and harder… but saw fewer and fewer results.

At 18, I was ranked 107th among North American players for the NHL draft

But I still didn’t get picked… I was someone who spoke his mind — and that didn’t go over well. I got labelled as “difficult”. I often clashed with coaches, and my relationships suffered because I hadn’t yet figured out how to stay true to myself in that environment. I didn’t understand the business side of hockey — that a coach’s job depends on your performance, and your future is in their hands.

Then one day, during practice, I took a puck to the face. I couldn’t speak for four weeks — a kind of forced silent retreat. And during that silence, my whole perspective started to shift. I realized there was more to life than hockey. Until then, I’d honestly believed the world existed just so I could play hockey — full-on God complex.

At 20, I went to play in the BCHL to reconnect with the joy of the game. Then I signed with a pro team in the East Coast Hockey League, played four games… and walked away. It just didn’t feel right anymore.

That’s when the real journey began — the one within.

I had to figure out who I was without hockey. And once I did, I knew I wanted to help others do the same.

“Today, I work with hockey moms to help them support their young athletes — building emotional resilience at home, reducing performance pressure, and creating the confidence their kids need to thrive on and off the ice.

Don’t Take It Only From Me

Here’s What Other parents Experienced

“Having Tom work with my son has been incredible. Because he’s a former pro, he truly understands the pressures of the game and knows how to guide young players. Since starting, we’ve seen our son gain confidence and enjoy hockey again, both on and off the ice."

- Pierre

“Before working with Thomas, our son was stressed and lacked confidence in his hockey games, which affected his motivation and even school. Through Thomas’s guidance, he learned practical tools for meditation, breathing, and self-control, and began taking his training and nutrition seriously. We see this as a lifelong investment. Our son gained confidence, focus, and a sense of well-being that will benefit him far beyond the rink."

- Julie

“Watching your kid struggle on the ice is tough, and we wanted him to enjoy the game again. Working with Tom, who’s been a pro himself, made all the difference. Our son actually listens and takes his advice seriously. It’s been amazing to see him grow, both in hockey and as a person."

- Sylvain

I went through the struggles...

So you don’t have to watch your child go through them...

No one had prepared me for what I was going to face as a young athlete.

Not the pressure.

Not the doubts.

Not the battles happening inside my own head.

I had the talent. The work ethic. The dream.

But I didn’t have the tools.

And no one had shown my mom how to support me through it all — how to talk to me before and after games, how to help me separate who I was from how I performed, how to guide me without adding more pressure.

By the time I figured it out, it felt too late. I had already lost confidence, joy, and connection with the game… and with myself.

That’s why I created this session for Hockey Dads.

➡️ So you don’t feel powerless when your child is stressed or struggling.

➡️ So you can step into your most powerful role — being their strongest ally

➡️ So you can give your child the emotional tools to thrive — in hockey, at school, and in life.

Everything I teach in The Inner Game of Hockey comes from lived experience — the mindset, awareness, and resilience I wish my own mom had been guided to share with me.

It Works — On and Off the Ice.

"It helped me refocus during games and concentrate on what I need to do."

- Felix

"On and off the ice, l've become a more confident person."

- Vlad

"There's nothing more powerful than having someone who can help you that's been through it themselves."

- Francis

Real Players. Real Shifts. Real Results.

"I was stressed, frustrated, and couldn’t play at my full potential. The sessions taught me how to stay calm, manage my emotions, and approach hockey with less pressure and more fun. I also picked up habits like better nutrition and consistent routines that made a real difference on and off the ice. I immediately saw improvements and didn’t want to stop."

- Louis

"The biggest challenge for me was my confidence. If something went wrong on the ice, I couldn’t shake it, and it messed with my whole game. I really wanted to get better at mental preparation. Working with Tom completely changed that. He helped me focus, get my confidence back fast, and play with more creativity."

- Marc

"Working with Tom made a huge difference for me because he’s been a pro himself. He really understands what it’s like on the ice, and that made it way easier to trust his advice. Since starting, I’ve been more confident, focused, and able to play without overthinking everything."

- Étienne
